UNILORIN awards scholarship to 246 students

The Senate of the University of Ilorin has awarded scholarships to 246 students during the 2014/2015 academic session.
According to the University Bulletin issued on Wednesday in Ilorin, the gesture was in recognition of the students’ brilliant academic performances at their various levels across all faculties of the University.

The bulletin stated that the breakdown of the awards was contained in the just published University of Ilorin 2014/2015 Annual Report.

It stated that the scholarships were awarded to 12 students of the Faculty of Agriculture, 32 students of the Faculty of Arts, 14 from the Faculty of Basic Medical Science and six from the Faculty of Clinical Science.

It said that 16 were from the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, 37 from the Faculty of Education and 36 students from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology.

Further breakdown showed that one student from the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, 13 students from the Faculty of Law, 16 from the Faculty of Life Sciences, 12 from the Faculty of Management Sciences and six from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, among others.

It said that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, noted that the scholarship award was “basically to reward hard work and to serve as morale booster for the recipients while it will further motivate and encourage other students to strive hard to attain that great height.”

Ambali, however, commended the University scholars and advised other students to attach seriousness to their studies for them to be recipients of the award in the 2015/2016 academic session.

The VC pointed out that the University of Ilorin “is known for the best’’ and pledged that his leadership would continue to do everything humanly possible not only to sustain the feat and to consolidate on the existing achievements.

400 Athletes From Various Institutions Register For Unilorin 21Km Marathon

At least 400 athletes from various institutions in Kwara state have so far registered to participate in the first of its kind University of Ilorin Marathon, which is slated for October 20. This disclosure was delivered by the Chairman of University of Ilorin Sports Council, Professor Uche Bassey Eke, during a visit to the monarch. Eke disclosed that over 400 participants had indicated interest in the competition. According to him, the event was used to celebrate academic stability of the institution, its 40th anniversary and as part of the convocation activities. The monarch, who was described as an entrepreneur, philanthropist and sportsman, commended the University of Ilorin for its academic excellence and innovation and pledged his support for the competition. Eke called on his support towards the successful organizsation of the 21 kilometer race. Meanwhile, the university has continued to get support from individuals, corporate organisations and philanthropists, the latest being the Olofa of Offa in Offa Local Government Area of the state, Oba Mohammed Mufutau Gbadamosi, Esuwoye II, who has pledged support for the event

UNILORIN graduate 31 medical students

Ilorin - Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin has advised doctors against embarking on the proposed nationwide strike.
Ambali made the appeal on Wednesday in Ilorin during the Professional Initiation and Admission Ceremony for 31 Batch B Medical Students who graduated from the university.

The VC, who was represented at the event by Professor Sidikat Ijaiya, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics said that as custodian of life, doctors had the duty to preserve life anf going on strike was contrary to what they stood for.
According to him, the medical profession was noble and divine and the success witnessed at the event was as a result of students being fortunate and hard working.

"The micro world of the university is different from the macro world out there and this necessitate us to brazen up to the challenges in the world," he said.
Professor AbdulWahab Johnson, the Provost, College of Health Sciences of the University, who congratulated the inductees, urged them to be good ambassadors of the institution.
He said that the College of Health Sciences of the University was among the reputed medical schools in the country.
Dr Abdulmumin Ibrahim, Registrar at the the Medical and Dental Services of Nigeria advised the graduates to always make documentation of their work and regularly check on their patients.

Ex-students brings Hollywood to UNILORIN for film, workshops

A crew from Hollywood is set to turn the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) into a movie set for new flick.

Hollywood Actor, Producer and Director, Bayo Akinfemi, revealed this development last week when he visited the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON).

Akinfemi, who was the President of the Performing Arts Students Association during his time at university, said workshops will also be held for students.

He said the workshop and the film will give  Performing Arts students an opportunity to have learn and understand the practical aspects of what they are being taught, noting that is important for students to learn to translate stage acting to film,

The former alumnus also noted that it is possible to produce Oscar Award winning films in Nigeria provided the enabling environment is created.

Ambali lauded the filmmaker for his efforts, adding that his successes signal that he had put what he learnt at the institution to use.

“You have done this for national development and for the entire world," Ambali said.

"You are flying the flag of the University really high."

The Vice Chancellor added that the institution is planning to own a TV station in addition to its popular radio station.

Akinfemi is known for a number of films including Bulletproof Monk (2003), Human Cargo (2004) and Far Cry 2 (2008).

Nigerian Graduates Struggle Favorably, Says UNILORIN VC

With the collapse of must infrastructure in Nigerian universities, products of Nigerian universities are globally spirited; Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Prof Abdulganiyu Ambali disclosed this during an event at the university environment.

Ambali noted that the perceived falling standard of education in the country has no effect on annual rating of Nigerian universities in the world.

He said that reports from various employers of labour in and outside the country indicated that Nigerian graduates are performing to the admiration of their employers.

Speaking with reporters in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, the professor of veterinary medicine recalled that UNILORIN was ranked first among Nigerian universities in Africa in previous years.

The university was recently ranked 41st in Africa with the University of Lagos in 29th position in Africa.

Ambali, who said that annual world ranking of universities was about every university keying into best practices in the world, added that certain variables were used to arrive at the rating.

They include: age of the university, assets, level of endowment and laureate attracted to the university, Information Communication Technology (ICT) capacity, how much money the university could attract through research works, and presence of the Web and number of activities on campus.

Ishowo wins 2nd best Students' Union president in Nigeria

The President of the University of Ilorin Students' Union, Comrade Yakubu Ishowo, has been adjudged the second best students’ union president in the country, following his sterling performance at the just concluded 2015 Students' Leadership Development Tournament (SLEDT).
At the grand finale of the three-day tournament, co-sponsored by Worldview International and Lead Initiative, held penultimate Friday (May 22, 2015), the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Adebisi Balogun, announced that the University of Ilorin team, led by Comrade Ishowo, had a total of 315.5 points to pick the second position.
Prof. Balogun, who is also the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, also announced that the Osun State University team scored 318.5 points to pick the first position while the Federal University of Technology, Owerri; the Federal University of Technology, Minna and the University of Calabar, polled 263.5; 256 and 242 points, to pick the third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Other laurels won by Comrade Ishowo at the leadership tournament include: the Most Visionary Students' Union President in Nigeria, the Most Productive Students' Union President in Nigeria, the Most Peaceful Students' Union President in Nigeria, the Students' Union President with Best Continuity Plan, and the Most Accountable Students' Union President in Nigeria.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), commended the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) for its non-violent approach to issues in recent times and for finding a workable method of interacting with University managements across the country.
Prof. Ambali urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to emphasise character-moulding in the Nigerian university system.
The Vice-Chancellor also noted that at the University of Ilorin, the students’ union has been changing the baton of leadership without rancour for several years and the fact that election is conducted electronically has eliminated the possibility of election malpractice.
In his address, Prof. Balogun recalled that he was wary of students' unrest during his tenure as the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, adding that on assumption of office, he met with the leaders of the Students' Union Government and took them on tours of universities in South Africa and the United Kingdom (UK) to learn from their student/management relationship .
Prof. Balogun pointed out that it is not in the interest of students to attack an institution whose certificate they will eventually hold.
He said that one of the ideals with which the University of Ilorin is known is consistency in its academic calendar and other achievements, as he recalled that the Association of West African Universities was established right at the University of Ilorin Auditorium.
